NUJ LAGOS COUNCIL ASSESS LGA/LCDA PROJECTS IN LAGOS

The first day of the tour saw the team visiting the Agege local government and the Orile Agege LCDA.
At the Agege local government, the team was received by the protocol officer to the chairman , Bidemi Amodu . The team visited the vocational centre which house the computer centre and the hairdressing dept. At the computer center , Tosin Arowolo, the computer inspector explained that the centre was handed over to the council by UNDP/NAPEP. She said already five hundred trainees have passed through the tutorage of the center.

The hairdressing course she explained runs between three to nine months, while publicity is often made for registration for the courses which she explainned is free.
The chairman, Hon. jubril Ayodeji Abdulkareem, who later joined the team ,apologising for his late arrival, briefed the team on the various projects of the council. The chairman then led the team to some of the project sites.
Projects visited included the Sango primary health center, Majaro road construction, the olusanya komolafe road,the community project at Adetona street.
The chairman said as part of upcoming projects, plans are on to provide a maternity center in each of the seven wards in the area.

It was a different story at orile Agege LCDA as the chairman was not available to welcome the team.Two staffs of the council were however mandated to take the team to the various project sites. Sites visited included the housing project in Abule Egba under construction, the power projects at Olabua street which was yet to be powered,and the Rehabilitation of block of four classrooms at bishop Ajara primary school where the head teacher refused the team access to inspect the project.
Altogether the team found out that the staff mandated to take the team out knew little or nothing about the project.
The second day of the tour took the team to to Ifako Ijaiye local government and Jokoro LCDA.
Although the chairman Ifako Ijaiye local government,Hon Demola Doherty was not around when the team visited,they were briefed by the supervisor for works Hon Tokunbo Ogunsanya in the presence of the information officer dapo okediran and some other council executives.


The council officials later took the team to project sites.Projects visited included Bishop hughes road construction and drainage const.,Obawole bridge, the Abiola Onijemo link bridge to link Ogba,oke Ira with Iju.
Other project sites visited include the water of life project, a government private sector initiative, the primary health center at Ashabi taiwo st. Obalowo community and the upgrading of existing 6 classrooms belonging to st-kizito pry school ,iju.
The team later went back to the local council where they were briefed by the council manager,Rafiu Omowole Fashola on behalf of the chairman .
He said the major challenge of local government is in expressing the essence of governance.He said it is essencial that local councils ensure that the dividend of democracy is placed on the door step of the people.

Throwing more light on the Abiola Onijemo Bridge ,which has been described as a large project, he said local councils need not be myopic but positive in their think.
The team is expected to visit the Ikeja local government, Ojodu LCDA and Onigbongbo LCDA.
